About The Computer – Hard Disk

4th in our series, we’ll look at the Hard Disk today.

The Series

The objective of the “About The Computer” series to provide a simplistic layman-style explanation on the various computer components that makes up a computer – whether it is a Desktop unit or Laptop / Notebook unit.
With the understanding of the components, readers will have better knowledge as to what should they pay attention when it comes to buying a computer.

What Is The Hard Disk?

Put it simple – the part of your computer that stores permanent data. Permanent, as in “it stays there until you remove it”.
About The Computer - Hard Disk
As usual, I’m not going to dwell into technical details or history lessons. Basically just know that if you’re buying a computer – the hard disk will be usable on the available components of today. If you’re buying a hard disk to use it on an OLDER system, please take note of the available connector types.
It’s advisable to find out the make of your computer, or the model of the motherboard. These information are critical if you’re uncertain whether the hard disk is usable on your machine – at least a knowledgeable person can help you out. :D
Hard disks today use Serial ATA (a.k.a SATA) connectors.

How Does It Work?

To understand this better – think of your hard disk as a warehouse that stores all the needed items for your projects and the RAM as a room where you work on your projects. (Same analogy I used in the previous article)
So each time you run an application, it is like a NEW PROJECT. So the computer will refer to the contents stored on the hard disk and have everything need placed in your “virtual project room” which is your RAM.

Hard Disk and Performance

A few things to note about the hard disk, let’s go based on the specifications below.
About The Computer - Hard Disk
Normally when people talk about hard disk performance, it’s all about how fast the read and write. “Read”, as in how fast could the data be read and “Write”, as in how far the data could be written on the hard disk.
The PERFORMANCE section on the image above shows you just how the hard disk performs. Note : The units are in mili-seconds! For the average user, you can’t tell the hard disks apart just by using. Even for us experience users, it’s something we can’t exactly FEEL. No one could use a computer and guess what the hard disk’s RPM is.
For the average user, only size matters. For those who want things to be fast, they look at the figures such as the spindle speed (eg 7200 RPM), the cache and the read/write speed. Truth be told, most of us just get the one which we feel good at. So far I’ve not come by any soul that actually bought a hard disk and does a benchmark to show it off.
Those who are really keen on speed would’ve run a RAID setup. (No, I will not go into that one here. I admit that the complexity is beyond my capability to explain either.)

What Hard Disk Size For You?

Size here refers to the storage capacity. So what size for you? If you’re just using it for E-mail, surfing, office productivity – even a 20GB hard disk is more than sufficient. The thing is that even at this time, 20GB hard disks are non-existent. The smallest size hard disk you can find are the 160GB variants, a size that’s more than enough for the average person.
For those playing games, mass downloading (usually videos), image and graphic storage, then certainly you could use the additional space. Games these days take up quite a huge chunk of disk space but nothing a 160GB can’t handle unless you intend to have more than 10 games residing in your computer. Do bear in mind that some applications (such as Adobe Photoshop) make use of hard disk space for their “scratch disk”, dedicated for only temporary storage and often used when RAM is insufficient.
If you’re clueless – just go with the smallest size available. It does less damage to your bank. The funny thing about hard disk is that the higher it goes, the better the value for money in terms of $$$ per GB.
For example, 160GB hard disk at RM 135 averages to about 84 Sen per GB. 800GB hard disks at RM 230 averages to 28 Sen per GB. Wahlauyeh!!! SO MUCH DIFFERENCE?!?!?! Might as well get 800GB hard disk, right?
Not necessarily so. It’s a feel good thing. It feels good to know you’re spending only 28 sen per GB instead of 84 sen per GB but here’s the thing – are you going to use all of it? If your usage barely takes up hard disk space, then 160GB or 800GB makes no difference, other than being RM 100 less in the bank.
Another funny thing about disk space is that if you’re good at filling up the available space – no hard disk in this world is enough for you, it’s just a matter of time before you run out of space. Many friends of mind are excessive downloaders, they fill up a few GB space on daily basis. :)
Vice versa, if your “space filling” is really slow then it’s likely you wouldn’t even run out of disk space. The hard disk would probably break down before you even get to that point. :)
To give you a better idea, imagine you have 150GB space out of the 160GB space (10GB allocated for Operating System). Now assuming you accumulate even 10 megabytes of data on a daily basis, that amounts to only 300 megabytes a month which is about 3.6 GB per year………. only 2% of total disk space used per year.
Anyway, here’s my 3 years worth of photos.
About The Computer - Hard Disk
:) I’m running out of disk space myself. :D

External Hard Disks

There are external hard disks such as the Seagate FreeAgent Go and Maxtor Basics that I reviewed recently.
They’re great for storage but certainly not something you’d use for games and all. The USB connection is far from being the speed of a Serial-ATA connection. It’s great for backup but not for frequent loading of stuff.
Alternatively there’s the E-SATA connection, basically it allows externally connectivity for the SATA-based hard disks. E-SATA would have a transfer rate that’s much faster than USB 2.0

Concluding the Article

In the past, the rule of thumb on getting a hard disk was to take the size you have in mind, double it and get the next biggest size.
With the insane amount of hard disk space, the rule doesn’t seem all that nice anymore.
:D “Space, the final frontier” is not what it seems when it comes to computers.

About The Computer – Motherboard

2nd in our series, we’ll look at the motherboard today.

What Is The Motherboard?

Here’s what a motherboard looks like, while the layout, color and everything else varies – a motherboard is hard to be mistaken for anything else. A motherboard is also commonly called the mainboard.
About The Computer - Motherboard
Why? Because it’s big, in fact it’s the single biggest component that’s guaranteed to be found inside your computer’s casing. It’s not necessarily the heaviest but it certainly holds a rather huge dimension.
Guaranteed? Yes, every single PC has this component inside. See that off-white squarish part of it? That’s where the processor is mounted. The rest of the parts.
The key function of the motherboard is to be the “traffic controller” among all the components. The processor, memory, graphic system, disk drives and whatever else that you need to use has to go through the motherboard.
You could equate the motherboard as the nervous system on a human body – both power and data signals travel up and down the motherboard, relaying communication between devices.

Evolved

Motherboards in the pass were just PCBs to place your processor, RAM and graphic card and everything else to be mounted on. Really old systems had all those serial and parellel ports that had to be connected to the motherboard and all, a really messy state.
As time evolved the motherboard we see sound systems being integrated, unlike before where people had to spend for sound cards – my father bought me an generation Sound Blaster 2.0 for around RM 500 ( I’m really grateful for that, so now’s my turn to buy him computer stuff. :D )
About The Computer - Motherboard
Network Interface that used to be an add-on component were integrated as well. Nowadays we see even more advanced components being available on motherboard, such as HDMI port for graphic output. USB ports, S/PDIF ports, Firewire ports and so on.

Choosing The Motherboard

Choosing motherboard is actually pretty easy when you’re not expecting anything out of it, just as long as it works. Typically any board works fine as long as the processor (check the processor socket, eg LGA775) and RAM (check the RAM type, eg DDR2) are supported. If it doesn’t come with graphic system, then you’ll need to get a graphic card for it and make sure the board supports it (the correct expansion slot available, eg PCI-E x16). Some motherboards are better than others, for example there are those that use solid capacitors.
Other features that enthusiats often look at are like chipsets that allow you to overclock. Motherboards towards the higher side often allow the use of multiple graphic cards (Crossfire / SLI) , some even allow RAID hard disk configuration.
About The Computer - Motherboard
In summary – you don’t need what you don’t know. :) If you’re just looking for something that works – any board will do, just don’t buy an Intel board for AMD processor because it won’t work. RAM compatibility issues do happen here and there but from my experience, it’s not that rampant an issue.
Generally a high end board works the same as a low end board. Place an Intel Core2Duo Q6600 with 4GB RAM and GTS250 on a low end rig motherboard and high end motherboard and they’ll perform the same.
*Note : The recommendation / guide is catering for newbies, therefore we’re using a simplistic approach. To those who already know exactly what is a board and what they want and all – clearly this article is not for you. :)

How To Remove Brontok Virus

Brontok

This worm seem very popular, it mostly effecting our local IPT, what is Brontok? It’s a virus from the I-worm family. The virus is spread through the network so basically all the pc in a single network will be infected immediately once the infected pc connects into the network. What it does is creating new files which looked like a folder but its actually a .exe file. Unless you’ve enabled the view extensions in the folder options or else you won’t see the .exe extension of the file. The files are approximately 43.7Kb each and normally people will click to open them because they looked like a folder. So after you’ve open it, the virus will run each time during startup and keep on spreading and spreading… into the hard drives.

More troubles coming up. Normally when you click “Tools” in explorer, there’s a “folder options” underneath it. Once the pc is infected with the virus, the Folder Options will be missing, which disabled you to change the options to view the extension of the files. So when you see a new folder appeared from nowhere and you clicked to open it out of curiousity, the virus spread more again. Moreover, the virus disabled the registry edit where you will see this message “Registry edit is disabled by the administrator” everytime you try to edit the registry.

So how to clean the virus then? I found some solution from Symantec.

W32.Rontokbro@mm aka brontok.a

This article is based upon what’s written on Symantec Security Response. The original article can be found here
Read the original page to know much into the technical details. I’ll just extract the information on how to remove it, since u already know what it does and what name it carries.

Removal Instructions.

The following instructions pertain to all current and recent Symantec antivirus products, including the Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus product lines.

1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP)
2. Disable network folder sharing on any folder.
3. Update the virus definitions. Install one if you never had any. Norton and AVG already tested to be working. NOD32 might results to failure if the infections happen for the second time.
4. Boot the pc into safe-mode.
5. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected. You may want to repeat this step a few times if there’s any file that failed to be removed.
6. After the files are deleted, restart the computer in Normal mode and proceed with the next section.

Warning messages may be displayed when the computer is restarted, since the threat may not be fully removed at this point. You can ignore these messages and click OK. These messages will not appear when the computer is restarted after the removal instructions have been fully completed. The messages displayed may be similar to the following:

Title: [FILE PATH]
Message body: Windows cannot find [FILE NAME]. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

7. Use the Security Response “Tool to reset shell\open\command registry subkeys.”

Link here.
1. To delete the value from the registry
Click Start > Run.

Type regedit

Click OK.

Note: If the registry editor fails to open the threat may have modified the registry to prevent access to the registry editor. Security Response has developed a tool to resolve this problem. Download and run this tool, and then continue with the removal.

Navigate to the subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane, delete the value:

“Bron-Spizaetus” = “C:\WINDOWS\PIF\CVT.exe”

Exit the Registry Editor.

To delete the scheduled tasks added by the worm

Click Start, and then click Control Panel. (In Windows XP, switch to Classic View.)
In the Control Panel window, double click Scheduled Tasks.
Right click the task icon and select Properties from pop-up menu.
The properties of the task is displayed.
Delete the task if the contents of the Run text box in the task pane, matches the following:

%UserProfile%\Templates\A.kotnorB.com

Or just delete anything that you don’t recognize or remember that you created. Just delete anything suspicious.

Ok now you are almost done. (The steps below are not covered by Symantec.)

Open your folder options (Start > Control Panel > Folder Options). If you failed to do so, follow this step:

Run you regedit.exe again and browse to this code:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\Policies\NoFolderOptions

Data Type: DWORD = 00000001

Change the DWORD value to 00000000. You may need to restart your computer after that.

Now in the Folder Options, go to “View” tab, untick the option Hide extensions for known file types

Now browse carefully into you documents folder, since most of the time the worm will resides there. Try looking into you pictures folder (eg: My Pictures). If there’s a file that looks like a folder but ends something with .exe, delete it. Most of the time the name will be the duplication of the folder itself. (eg: D:\Documents\My Pictures\personal\personal.exe). The icon will be folder icon so be careful. If you happen to double click it, you will need to remove the virus again.

Check all folders in each drive just to make sure you are clean from it.

Sounds complicated right? If you using ZoneAlarm Security Suite you batter unistall it and change antivirus. Why uninstalled it? because ZA is almost useless in detecting worms where I found more than 20 files infected by scanning using AVG while ZA can’t find anything at all~! After cleaning, I installed another program, Ewido Anti-Malware, to check there’s any worm or spyware still available. This program is really good as it can detect spywares, worms, trojans, and even keyloggers. I found 160+ files infected after scanning the whole system in Safe Mode. Mostly are just trackers which is not really harmful.

The final steps I did are just following the steps above. In the end, I managed to enable the registry edit and also my folder options again. Now my pc is finally clean from the Brontoks~ I’ve killed you Brontoks!! Yayy!!

P/s: I found some alternative way to delete the virus. Not tested but it is being distributed by popular antivirus programs. Try using the removal tools from Bitdefender and Kaspersky

Download the tools and scan your computer with it. It will remove all the files infected with the Brontok virus. Good luck!~
